Calling people “IT” over at my house is running joke.“Where is IT?”What is IT doing?”We do that because we have become rather acquainted by the use of the word “IT” to refer to another human beings by my 85 year old grandmother. The first time this was pointed out to me years ago by one of my foster parents, my heart sunk.My grandmother was referring to my mother in the conversation for mentioned and my foster mother thought this might explain some of the reasons my mother is such a damaged human being.
This is what the Waller County D.A. said about Sandra Bland. He can’t determine cause of death, but he can judge her. pic.twitter.com/SmfKo2tbv4
This is where the joke that really is not that funny started. The joke is a knee jerk reaction from somewhat normal people to make sense of something senseless in our case. However, in the case of Sandra Bland this makes perfect sense if you have been paying attention to how we treat people of color in America. When all the people around you in a given circumstance consider you an “IT” and not a “she”, they can as in this case come up with all kinds of reasons you are less than human. The natural course of that thinking is we can do whatever the hell we like to “IT”.
Prosecutor who called Sandra Bland an “it” has been accused of racism before… GO FIGURE.
There is some kind of irony in the fact that the hashtag for incidents of black and brown woman killed or abused in police custody is #SayHerName. It is almost as though the people of color already knew the deal that those of us of lighter skin just don’t get. They are so intimately aware of our caucasian terrorist way they are actually employing the psychology of crisis negotiation.
It is easier to kill, rape or brutalize women and other people of color if they seem less than human to you. This is why so much of the propaganda around race depict minorities as sub-human monsters that must be eradicated. They are reminding us by #SayHerName that they are persons also.My question is what is wrong with you that you need this reminder?
People of color are all to aware that the perception of the general white public was that Sandra Bland would be considered an “IT” When they ask you to #SayHerNAME it is an attempt turn her into the person she was to to the people who absolutely can not see “IT”.
